What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition that presents as blackheads, red rashes and that leaves blemishes and uninflamed blackheads, pus-filled pimples or large tender bumps on the skin. Acne is caused by the follicles being plugged by dead skin and oil. Acne mostly occurs in adolescent teens but can be present in people of all ages.

Treatment for acne in men and women

Skin treatment medication available over the counter mostly comes in variations for topical or oral use like creams, foams, washes, ointments, tablets and vitamins. Clotrimazole, Ketoconazole, Terbinafine, benzoyl peroxide, corticosteroids, salicylic acid, Dyclosacylin, Erythromycin, Enzyme inhibitors, Fluconazole, Acyclovir, Balacyclovir and Prednisone among others.

 

Side effects of skin infection medication

Dermatologists prefer topical treatment of skin infection. However, it is sometimes necessary to use oral medications to counter infection. Some skin treatment medications like retinoids and isotretinoin should not be used by people planning to get pregnant, pregnant women or lactating mothers. Some of the side effects of skin medication include depression and suicide, inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), dry skin and lips, headache, muscle and joint pain, elevated triglyceride level/ high cholesterol and temporary hair shedding though this is rare. If you experience adverse reactions with any of the skin medication like kindly stop the treatment and seek medical attention.
