Overview

Pepto-Bismol is a well-known oral suspension containing bismuth subsalicylate, used to relieve common digestive upsets. It helps soothe an upset stomach, indigestion, heartburn, nausea and diarrhoea, and is often used for traveller's tummy and over-indulgence. The familiar pink liquid coats and calms the stomach lining and works in the gut to ease symptoms and firm up loose stools. Pepto-Bismol offers multi-symptom relief for occasional digestive discomfort in adults and older children. Confirm suitability and dosing by age on the packaging.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Take by mouth using the dosing cup, at the dose stated on the packaging for adults and children over the stated age. Doses can usually be repeated every 30-60 minutes or as needed, up to a maximum number of doses in 24 hours. Do not exceed this. Do not use for more than 2 days for diarrhoea without seeking advice.

Contains a salicylate (related to aspirin). Do not give to children or teenagers with, or recovering from, chickenpox or a flu-like illness (risk of Reye's syndrome), and avoid if you are allergic to aspirin or take other salicylates or blood thinners. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised. It may temporarily darken the tongue and stools, which is harmless. See a doctor if symptoms persist beyond 2 days, or with high fever or blood in the stool. Store below 25°C.
