Overview

Klacid 250mg/5ml Suspension (50ml) is Abbott's double-strength paediatric clarithromycin for children who need a higher antibiotic dose without more volume. Clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, treats chest infections, throat and tonsil infections, middle-ear infections and some skin infections, and is a key penicillin alternative for allergic children. The pleasant fruit-flavoured suspension and twice-daily dosing make it practical for school-age children, and its strength suits bigger kids whose dose would otherwise mean large spoonfuls of standard suspension.

Clarithromycin 250mg per 5ml when reconstituted. Contains sucrose.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor. Dosing is by the child's weight, usually 7.5mg/kg twice daily for 5-10 days. Shake the reconstituted bottle well and measure with the syringe or spoon provided. May be given with or without food; food helps if it upsets the stomach. Complete the full course. Use the reconstituted suspension within 14 days; do not refrigerate (it thickens).

Do not use with known macrolide allergy, or alongside certain medicines. Clarithromycin interacts widely (statins, some antihistamines, ergot medicines, colchicine and others); tell your doctor everything the child takes. Caution with heart rhythm disorders (QT prolongation) and liver or kidney impairment. Diarrhoea, taste changes and stomach upset are the most common effects; persistent watery diarrhoea needs review.
