Spiriva 18mcg Inhalation Powder (30 capsules with HandiHaler device) contains tiotropium, Boehringer Ingelheim's long-acting bronchodilator for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Taken just once a day, tiotropium relaxes and keeps the airways open for a full 24 hours, easing breathlessness and reducing flare-ups in chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The capsules are not swallowed. Each is pierced inside the HandiHaler and the powder breathed in. A cornerstone maintenance therapy that helps many people with long-term COPD breathe more easily through the day.

Active: Tiotropium 18mcg per capsule (as tiotropium bromide monohydrate). Excipient: lactose monohydrate (contains milk proteins).

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor. One capsule inhaled once daily at the same time each day. Do not swallow the capsules. Place one capsule in the HandiHaler chamber, press the side button once to pierce it, then breathe out fully and inhale deeply through the mouthpiece so the powder reaches your lungs; breathe in twice from the same capsule to empty it. Discard the empty capsule, close the device and rinse your mouth. It is a preventer, not a reliever. Keep using it daily even when you feel well.

This is a maintenance inhaler and does not relieve a sudden attack. Always keep your reliever (e.g. salbutamol) for that. Avoid getting the powder in your eyes, as tiotropium can trigger or worsen narrow-angle glaucoma (eye pain, halos, blurred vision. Seek care). Dry mouth is common. Caution with prostate enlargement, bladder outflow problems or kidney impairment. Tell your doctor about other anticholinergic medicines. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
