Overview
Mercilon Tablets are a combined oral contraceptive pill ('the pill') containing two hormones. Desogestrel and a low dose of ethinylestradiol. Taken regularly, they prevent pregnancy mainly by stopping the ovaries releasing an egg each month, while also thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining. Mercilon is a low-oestrogen pill, which can suit women who want effective contraception with a lower hormone dose. It can also help make periods more regular, lighter and less painful. A reliable, doctor-prescribed contraceptive option for women, when taken correctly every day.
Actives: Desogestrel 150 micrograms and Ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms per tablet.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Take exactly as directed. One tablet at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free break (during which a withdrawal bleed usually occurs), then start the next pack. Follow the pack and your doctor's instructions on how to start and what to do if you miss a pill. If you miss a pill, vomit, or have severe diarrhoea, follow the missed-pill advice and use extra precautions (condoms) as directed. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Tell your doctor before use about a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, certain migraines (with aura), breast cancer, liver disease, smoking (especially over 35), or being immobile. The combined pill is not suitable for everyone. Seek urgent care for calf pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, or sudden vision or speech problems (possible clot). Some medicines (including certain antibiotics and epilepsy drugs) reduce its effect. It does not protect against STIs. Use condoms for that. Store below 30°C. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new medication or supplement. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
