Overview

Salazopyrin EN 500mg Tablets (100 pack) from Pfizer contain sulfasalazine in an enteric-coated ('EN') form that releases the medicine in the bowel. Sulfasalazine both calms inflammation in the gut and acts as a disease-modifying treatment for certain arthritis. In ulcerative colitis (and some Crohn's disease) it reduces inflammation in the lining of the bowel to control symptoms and maintain remission. In rheumatoid arthritis and related joint conditions it works over weeks to months to slow the disease and reduce joint damage. The enteric coating helps reduce stomach upset. A long-established, doctor-prescribed treatment for people with inflammatory bowel disease or inflammatory arthritis.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor. The dose is usually started low and increased gradually, taken in divided doses through the day after food, swallowed whole with plenty of water. It works slowly, particularly for arthritis, so it may take some weeks to feel the benefit; keep taking it regularly. Do not stop without advice, and attend the regular blood tests your doctor arranges.

Regular blood tests are needed, as sulfasalazine can occasionally affect the blood cells, liver or kidneys. Tell your doctor promptly about sore throat, fever, unusual bruising or bleeding, yellowing of the skin or a rash. Drink plenty of fluids. It can harmlessly turn urine and skin an orange-yellow colour and may stain soft contact lenses. It can lower folate (your doctor may advise a supplement) and, in men, temporarily reduce fertility. Tell your doctor about aspirin/sulfa allergy. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on advice. Store below 30°C.
