Microgynon 30 is a combined oral contraceptive pill ("the pill") containing two hormones, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel, used to prevent pregnancy. Taken correctly, it is over 99% effective, working mainly by stopping the release of an egg each month while also making it harder for sperm to reach an egg. Beyond reliable contraception, many women find it makes periods lighter, more regular and less painful. Directions for Use

Take one tablet at the same time every day for 21 days, then have a 7-day break (when a withdrawal bleed usually occurs) before starting the next pack. Follow the order on the strip. Swallow with water. If you start on the first day of your period, you are protected straight away; starting later may need extra precautions (such as condoms) for 7 days. If you miss a pill, follow the missed-pill instructions in the leaflet, as protection can be reduced. Do not take it as emergency contraception.

This pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. It is not suitable for everyone: tell your doctor if you smoke (especially if over 35), have had blood clots, stroke, certain migraines, very high blood pressure, breast cancer, or liver disease, as the combined pill can raise the risk of blood clots. See a doctor urgently for severe leg pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, or sudden severe headache. Some medicines and vomiting/diarrhoea can reduce its effect.
