Megace 160mg Tablets contain megestrol acetate, a progestogen (a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone) used in several ways. At this strength it is used mainly to stimulate appetite and help reverse the severe weight and appetite loss (cachexia) that can come with cancer, AIDS or other serious chronic illness, helping patients eat better and regain some weight. Megestrol is also used in the treatment of certain hormone-sensitive cancers, such as some breast and womb cancers. A doctor-prescribed medicine helping affected people improve appetite and weight, or as part of cancer treatment.

Active: Megestrol acetate 160mg per tablet.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor. The dose depends on what it is being used for, swallowed with water, with or without food, at the same time(s) each day. For appetite and weight it is taken regularly over weeks, with the benefit building gradually. Keep taking it as prescribed and attend reviews; do not stop suddenly without advice if you have been on it for a while.

Tell your doctor about a history of blood clots, as progestogens can increase clot risk. Seek urgent care for calf pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness or sudden severe headache. May cause weight gain, fluid retention, raised blood sugar (caution with diabetes) and, with long use, adrenal effects. Do not stop suddenly. Tell your doctor about high blood pressure, heart or liver problems. Not for use in pregnancy. Store below 30°C.
