Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor. Usually with or just after meals to reduce stomach upset, swallowed whole with water. Attend regular reviews of blood sugar and kidney function, and do not stop without advice.

Stop and seek urgent care for vomiting, rapid breathing, severe weakness or marked muscle pain (rare lactic acidosis). Tell your doctor about kidney or liver problems, and pause metformin around surgery or scans using contrast dye, and during serious illness, vomiting or dehydration. On its own it rarely causes low blood sugar, but the risk rises with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12. Avoid excess alcohol.
