Overview
Glucophage XR 500mg Tablets (90 pack) from Merck contain metformin in an extended-release formulation. The world's most prescribed first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes. The XR technology releases metformin slowly over the day, allowing convenient once-daily dosing with significantly less stomach upset than standard metformin. Metformin lowers blood sugar by reducing glucose production in the liver and improving the body's sensitivity to its own insulin, without causing weight gain or low blood sugar on its own. The 90-tablet pack gives people with type 2 diabetes a full three-month supply of the original branded metformin.
Metformin hydrochloride 500mg per extended-release tablet.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Glucophage XR is usually taken once daily with the evening meal. Taking it with food improves tolerance. Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew the extended-release tablet. Your doctor will adjust the dose gradually based on your blood sugar readings. An empty tablet shell may occasionally appear in the stool. This is normal; the medicine has been absorbed.
Do not use in severe kidney disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe dehydration, serious infection or heavy alcohol use. These raise the risk of a rare but serious complication called lactic acidosis (symptoms: rapid breathing, severe weakness, unusual muscle pain. Seek urgent care). Your doctor will check kidney function periodically, and may pause metformin around scans using contrast dye or major surgery. Long-term use can reduce vitamin B12 levels. Mild nausea or loose stools usually settle. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. Store below 30°C.
