Overview
Nexium 40mg Tablets contain esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in a higher strength that strongly reduces stomach acid production. It is used to heal acid-related damage to the food pipe (erosive oesophagitis), to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, to manage conditions causing excess acid, and as part of treatment to clear H. pylori infection. By cutting acid production, it relieves persistent heartburn and reflux and allows the gut lining to heal. Nexium 40mg is for adults who need more intensive acid suppression, used for a defined course under a doctor's guidance.
Active ingredient: Esomeprazole (as magnesium) 40 mg per tablet.
Directions for Use
This medicine is usually taken once a day. Swallow the tablet whole with water, ideally in the morning at least one hour before food; do not chew or crush it (it may be dispersed in water if swallowing is difficult). Take it for the full course prescribed, even after symptoms improve, as healing of ulcers or the oesophagus takes time. When used with antibiotics for H. pylori, complete the whole combination exactly as directed. Do not change the dose without medical advice.
Tell your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools, as these require investigation. Prolonged use may affect magnesium, vitamin B12 and bone strength, and should be reviewed periodically. Mention other medicines you take, as esomeprazole can interact with some (e.g. clopidogrel, certain antifungal and HIV medicines). Possible effects include headache, diarrhoea, constipation or stomach pain. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. Store below 30C in a dry place.
