Overview
Mesla 800mg (mesalazine, also called mesalamine or 5-ASA) is a prescription anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, mainly ulcerative colitis, and sometimes Crohn's disease. It works locally in the lining of the bowel to reduce inflammation, helping to relieve symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding, and to maintain remission (keep symptoms from coming back). It is used long-term by adults under a doctor's guidance.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor. Mesla 800mg is usually taken two or three times a day, with food, swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew (this can affect the special release coating). Keep taking it for as long as advised, including to maintain remission, even when you feel well. Do not stop without medical advice.
This is a prescription medicine. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to mesalazine or salicylates (e.g. aspirin), or have kidney problems. Kidney function may be monitored. Seek advice if you develop unexplained bruising, bleeding, sore throat or fever (possible blood effects), or worsening tummy symptoms. Stay well hydrated. Tell your doctor about other medicines (e.g. azathioprine, warfarin). Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on advice. Store in a cool, dry place.
