Overview

Daboral 250mg Tablets contain aminosidine sulphate (paromomycin), an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat intestinal protozoal infections including amoebiasis (amoeba), giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Common causes of persistent diarrhoea and stomach upset . It has also been used for tapeworm infection and, under specialist care, to suppress gut bacteria before bowel surgery and in managing hepatic encephalopathy. Because paromomycin is poorly absorbed into the blood, it acts directly inside the intestines where these parasites live, making Daboral an effective, targeted treatment for gut infections (20 tablets per pack).

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Typical adult dosing: amoebiasis and giardiasis: 500mg (two tablets) twice a day for 5-7 days; cryptosporidiosis: 500mg four times a day for 14 days. Children: usually 30mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5-7 days, as calculated by the doctor. Take with or after food with plenty of water, and complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.

Do not use if allergic to paromomycin or other aminoglycosides, or if you have an intestinal obstruction. Use with caution if you have ulcerative bowel lesions or kidney problems. Inadvertent absorption can affect the kidneys. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before use. Common side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, heartburn and diarrhoea. Prolonged use may cause overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms such as Candida.
