Overview

Gramocef 50mg/5ml Suspension is a children's antibiotic containing cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin, in a gentle paediatric strength. The easy-to-measure liquid is used to treat common bacterial infections in children, such as ear infections, throat and chest infections, and urinary tract infections. Cefixime works by killing the bacteria causing the infection. The low 50mg/5ml strength makes it well suited to younger or smaller children when weight-based dosing is needed. Gramocef suspension is prescribed for children whose doctor has confirmed a bacterial infection that responds to cefixime; it does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Directions for Use

This medicine requires a prescription. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Reconstitute the dry suspension with the stated amount of cooled boiled water if supplied as a powder, and shake well before each dose. Measure each dose with the cup or syringe provided and give at the times advised, usually twice daily. Give with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Complete the full prescribed course even if your child seems better, and use the made-up suspension within the period stated on the label.

Tell your doctor if your child is allergic to cefixime, other cephalosporins or penicillins, or has kidney problems. Diarrhoea is common; seek advice if it becomes severe, watery or bloody. Stop and seek urgent help if signs of an allergic reaction appear, such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Mention any other medicines your child takes. Once made up, the suspension usually needs to be stored as directed (often refrigerated) and discarded after the stated number of days. Keep the unmixed product below 30C.
