Klacid-XL 500mg Tablets from Abbott contain clarithromycin in a modified-release formulation that delivers a full day's antibiotic cover from a single daily dose. Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia, as well as skin and soft-tissue infections, in adults and adolescents. The once-daily XL formulation improves convenience and adherence and may be gentler on the stomach than standard twice-daily tablets. Klacid-XL is a trusted branded antibiotic option for patients, particularly those allergic to penicillin.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Take one 500mg modified-release tablet once daily with food. Food is required for proper absorption of the XL formulation. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew or break the tablet. Complete the full prescribed course (typically 5-14 days depending on the infection) even if you feel better early, to prevent the infection returning and resistance developing.

Do not use if allergic to macrolide antibiotics, or together with certain medicines including some statins (simvastatin), ergot medicines and others that affect heart rhythm. Tell your doctor everything you take, as clarithromycin has many interactions. Use with caution in liver, kidney or heart-rhythm (QT) problems. Common side effects include altered taste, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhoea; seek help for severe or bloody diarrhoea. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. Store below 30°C.
