Overview

Septrin Paediatric Syrup 100ml contains co-trimoxazole. The trusted trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole combination. Prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections in children, including some chest, urinary and ear infections. it also plays a vital public-health role as preventive (prophylactic) treatment against opportunistic infections in children and adults living with HIV, where daily co-trimoxazole significantly reduces illness. The banana-flavoured suspension makes accurate paediatric dosing simple, used strictly under medical direction.

Co-trimoxazole 240mg per 5ml (trimethoprim 40mg with sulfamethoxazole 200mg). Full excipient list available on product packaging.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor. Dosing is by age or weight, commonly 240mg (5ml) twice daily for young children for treatment courses, or once daily for HIV-related prophylaxis as advised. Shake well and measure with the spoon or syringe provided. Give with food or drink to reduce stomach upset, and keep up good fluid intake. Complete the prescribed course or continue prophylaxis for as long as advised.

Do not use with sulfa allergy. Stop immediately and seek urgent care for any spreading rash, blistering or mouth sores (risk of severe skin reactions). Avoid in infants under 6 weeks, severe liver or kidney disease, and certain blood disorders. Long courses may need blood monitoring. Report sore throat, fever, unusual bruising or paleness. Maintain hydration. Use in pregnancy only on medical advice (avoid near term). Interacts with methotrexate and warfarin. Store below 25°C protected from light.
