Overview
Symbicort Inhaler 160/4.5 is a combination preventer-and-reliever inhaler that contains budesonide, a corticosteroid that calms inflammation in the airways, and formoterol, a long-acting medicine that opens the airways. Used regularly, it helps control asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), reducing day-to-day symptoms such as wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness, and lowering the risk of attacks. In some asthma plans it is also used for relief of sudden symptoms. Symbicort is a maintenance treatment for adults, taken every day under a doctor's plan to keep breathing well controlled.
Active ingredients per inhalation: Budesonide 160 mcg and Formoterol fumarate 4.5 mcg. 120 doses.
Directions for Use
This medicine requires a prescription. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, as Symbicort can be prescribed in different regimens. Typically it is taken as one or two inhalations once or twice a day; some asthma plans also use it for sudden symptoms. Breathe out gently, place your lips around the mouthpiece, breathe in deeply and steadily, then hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Rinse your mouth with water after your maintenance doses to help prevent thrush and hoarseness. Follow your personalised action plan closely.
Always follow the specific regimen your doctor has set, and keep a separate fast-acting reliever available unless your plan uses Symbicort for relief. Seek urgent help if breathing worsens or your usual doses are not controlling symptoms. Do not stop suddenly without advice. Rinsing the mouth after use reduces thrush and hoarseness. Tell your doctor if you have a chest infection, tuberculosis, diabetes, an overactive thyroid or heart problems, and about other medicines. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
