Uses

Lamictal (lamotrigine) is primarily used to:

• Control seizures in adults and children with epilepsy, including partial-onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome 
  
• Delay or prevent mood episodes in adults with Bipolar I disorder, particularly depressive episodes, by stabilizing abnormal electrical activity in the brain 
  

Dosage and Administration

• Lamictal tablets are available in 25 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg strengths 
• Take the medication exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food 
  
• Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets; swallow them whole .
• Dosage may vary depending on age, condition, and whether Lamictal is used alone or with other medications 
• For children, immediate-release Lamictal can be used as add-on therapy from age 2, while extended-release forms are for those 13 years and older 

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Dizziness, sleepiness, headache, nausea, or blurred vision 
• Weight gain may occur during treatment Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention:
• Severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, especially in children or when starting at high doses or with valproate
