Overview

Femiplan is a combined oral contraceptive ('the pill') taken daily to prevent pregnancy. It contains a progestogen and an oestrogen that work mainly by stopping the release of an egg (ovulation), as well as thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining. A widely used, reliable daily contraceptive for women , it can also help make periods more regular and less painful, and is taken under guidance from a healthcare provider (28-tablet pack).

Directions for Use

This is a prescription/clinic-provided medicine. Take one tablet at the same time each day, following the order on the pack. With this 28-day pack, take a tablet every day with no break between packs, including the reminder/inactive tablets. If you miss a pill or start late, follow the missed-pill instructions in the leaflet and use extra (barrier) protection as advised. It is not for emergency (after-sex) contraception.

This medicine does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms for that. Combined pills carry a small increased risk of blood clots; seek urgent help for calf pain/swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache or sudden vision changes. Not suitable if you smoke and are over 35, or have a history of clots, certain migraines, some cancers or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Give your full medical history. Vomiting, diarrhoea or some medicines can reduce its effect. Tell your provider if pregnant or breastfeeding. Store in a cool, dry place.
