Overview

Emcon Tablets (2 pack) are emergency contraception containing levonorgestrel. The 'morning-after pill' used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (a missed pill, burst condom) to prevent pregnancy. Taken as soon as possible, levonorgestrel delays ovulation so fertilisation doesn't occur; it is a backup option, not a regular contraceptive method.

Directions for Use

Take as directed on the pack as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Effectiveness is highest within 24 hours and declines over 72 hours. Follow the pack on whether the dose is taken together or split. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking it, seek a replacement dose. Use condoms until your next period, and take a pregnancy test if your period is more than a week late.

Emergency contraception does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, and does not end an existing pregnancy. Your next period may be early or late, with possible spotting and breast tenderness. Effectiveness may be reduced by higher body weight and by enzyme-inducing medicines (some epilepsy, TB and herbal treatments. Including St John's Wort); seek pharmacist advice. Repeated use is safe but far less effective than regular contraception. Discuss ongoing options with a healthcare provider.
