Periods often change. Becoming irregular, lighter or stopping, which is common and usually harmless. Return of fertility can be delayed for several months to a year after stopping, so it may not suit you if you want to conceive soon. Long-term use may modestly reduce bone density (usually recovering after stopping). It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms for that protection. Tell your provider about clot history, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding or breast cancer history. Report severe or persistent symptoms.
