Overview
Postinor 2 is an emergency contraceptive (the morning-after pill) containing levonorgestrel, a hormone used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when a regular contraceptive method has failed (for example, a missed pill or a split condom). It works mainly by delaying or preventing the release of an egg. Postinor 2 is most effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, ideally within 72 hours. It offers women a safe, accessible back-up option for preventing an unintended pregnancy, but it is for occasional emergency use, not regular contraception.
Active ingredient: Levonorgestrel 0.75 mg per tablet (two tablets per pack).
Directions for Use
Take as soon as possible after unprotected sex. The sooner, the more effective. The two-tablet pack is commonly taken as both tablets together as a single dose, or as one tablet followed by the second 12 hours later; follow the directions on your pack or your pharmacist's advice. It can be taken at any time in the menstrual cycle. If you vomit within 2-3 hours of taking it, contact a pharmacist or doctor, as you may need another dose. This is for emergency use only, not regular contraception.
Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections and is less effective than regular contraceptive methods, so it should not be used routinely. It may make your next period earlier, later or heavier; if your period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test. Seek medical advice if you have lower abdominal pain afterwards, as ectopic pregnancy must be ruled out. Tell your pharmacist about other medicines you take, as some reduce its effect. Not intended during established pregnancy; usable while breastfeeding with brief timing advice. Store below 25C.
