Overview
Allopurinol 100mg Tablets (28 pack) are the long-standing first-choice treatment for preventing gout. Allopurinol lowers uric acid production in the body, stopping the formation of the sharp urate crystals that cause agonising gout attacks, tophi (urate lumps) and uric acid kidney stones. Taken daily, it does not treat an attack in progress. It prevents the next one, protecting joints and kidneys over the long term for the growing number of people managing gout alongside hypertension and diabetes.
Allopurinol 100mg per tablet. Contains lactose.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor. Usually starting at 100mg once daily after food, increased gradually to the dose that controls your uric acid (commonly 100-300mg daily). Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Keep taking it during a gout attack if already established on it, but do not start it during an acute attack. Attend regular uric acid and kidney monitoring.
Stop immediately and seek urgent care for any skin rash, fever, mouth ulcers or peeling skin. Rare but serious hypersensitivity reactions occur, usually in the first weeks. Gout flares can increase when starting. Your doctor may add temporary cover. Reduce dose in kidney impairment. Interacts importantly with azathioprine and mercaptopurine (dangerous combination) and warfarin. Avoid alcohol binges, which trigger gout. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Store below 30°C.
