Tegretol Syrup contains carbamazepine, a medicine used mainly to control epilepsy and to relieve certain types of nerve pain. It works by calming overactive electrical signals in the brain and nerves, helping to prevent seizures and to ease conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial nerve pain). It is also used to help stabilise mood in some conditions. The liquid form makes it easier to give an accurately measured dose, particularly for children and people who find tablets difficult, and is taken regularly under a doctor's supervision.

Active ingredient: Carbamazepine 100 mg per 5 ml.

Directions for Use

This medicine requires a prescription. Use only as directed by your doctor. Shake the bottle well and measure each dose carefully with the measuring device provided. Tegretol is usually taken two to four times a day with or after food; your doctor will start at a low dose and adjust it gradually. Take it regularly at the same times each day for the best control, and do not stop suddenly, as this can trigger seizures. Do not change the dose without medical advice.

Tell your doctor about all other medicines, as carbamazepine interacts with many (including some antibiotics, antidepressants and hormonal contraceptives, which it can make less effective). Seek urgent help if you develop a skin rash, fever, mouth ulcers, easy bruising, sore throat or yellowing of the skin/eyes, as rare but serious reactions can occur. It may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Take care when driving. Avoid in certain blood and heart conditions. Important: carbamazepine can harm an unborn baby, so discuss contraception and pregnancy plans with your doctor. Store below 30C, away from light.
