Overview

Valtas OD 500mg contains divalproex sodium (which provides valproate), an anti-epileptic and mood-stabilising medicine in a once-daily, extended-release tablet. It is a prescription medicine used to control epileptic seizures, to treat episodes of mania in bipolar disorder, and to help prevent migraine headaches. It works by calming excessive electrical activity in the brain and supporting the balance of brain chemicals, which helps reduce seizures and stabilise mood. The once-daily extended-release tablet supports convenient, long-term treatment under a doctor's care.

Divalproex sodium 500mg (extended-release), equivalent to valproic acid.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. It is usually taken once a day, with food, swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the extended-release tablet. Your doctor will set and adjust the dose gradually. Take it at the same time each day, and do not stop suddenly, as stopping abruptly can trigger seizures.

Divalproex (valproate) can seriously harm an unborn baby and must not be used in pregnancy, or by women who could become pregnant, unless under a special programme with effective contraception. Discuss this with your doctor. Do not stop suddenly. Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, and urgently report unusual tiredness, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or easy bruising. It can cause drowsiness.
