Stop and seek urgent care for signs of lactic acidosis (rare): rapid breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain or feeling very cold; or ketoacidosis (nausea, vomiting, drowsiness). May cause genital/urinary infections, dehydration and stomach upset. Metformin should be paused around contrast-dye scans or serious illness. Limit alcohol.
