Glucomet 500mg Film-Coated Tablets contain metformin hydrochloride, the first-line diabetes medicine recommended worldwide for type 2 diabetes. Manufactured by Cosmos Pharmaceuticals, Glucomet helps control blood sugar by reducing the amount of glucose the liver produces, slowing glucose absorption from the gut and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin. Used together with healthy eating and regular exercise, it does not normally cause low blood sugar on its own. Doctors may also prescribe metformin for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The 500mg strength is the usual starting dose for people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (28 tablets).

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. The usual starting dose is 500mg once daily, taken with or immediately after a meal to reduce stomach upset. Your doctor may increase the dose gradually; the maximum is usually 2000mg daily in 2-3 divided doses. Swallow tablets whole with water. Take Glucomet at the same times each day and keep up your recommended diet and exercise plan.

Do not use in diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney disease, heart failure, recent heart attack, severe dehydration or alcoholism. These increase the risk of a rare but serious complication called lactic acidosis. Your doctor will check kidney function before and during treatment. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, metallic taste and reduced appetite, usually easing with time. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12 levels. Tell your doctor before scans using contrast dye or before surgery. Metformin may need to be paused. Store below 30°C.
