Overview

Glucophage 1000mg Tablets contain metformin, the most widely used first-line medicine for type 2 diabetes. Metformin helps lower and control blood sugar by reducing the amount of glucose released by the liver and improving the body's response to insulin. Unlike some diabetes tablets, it does not usually cause low blood sugar on its own and may help with weight control. Glucophage is for adults (and children as prescribed) managing type 2 diabetes, used alongside a healthy diet and regular activity to keep blood sugar within a healthy range and reduce long-term complications.

Active ingredient: Metformin hydrochloride 1000 mg per tablet.

Directions for Use

This medicine requires a prescription. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Glucophage is usually taken once or twice daily with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew. Doses are increased gradually by your doctor to find the right level for you. Take it regularly at the same times each day, continue even when you feel well, and do not change the dose without medical advice. Keep up regular blood sugar checks.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, heart failure, or a serious infection or dehydration, and stop temporarily before procedures using contrast dye or major surgery, as metformin can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Seek urgent help for deep breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain or vomiting. Limit alcohol. Common early effects (nausea, diarrhoea, metallic taste) usually settle. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. Store below 25C.
