Overview
Atropine Eye Drops USP 1% (5ml) contain atropine sulfate, a medicine that relaxes the eye's focusing muscle and widens the pupil. Eye specialists use it to dilate the pupil and temporarily paralyse focusing for certain eye examinations, to rest and relieve the eye in inflammation such as uveitis (iritis), and as part of treatment for lazy eye (amblyopia) in children. By relaxing the internal eye muscles, atropine eases pain from spasm and allows the eye to heal. A doctor-prescribed eye drop used under specialist supervision .
Active: Atropine sulfate 1% w/v. Preservative: benzalkonium chloride.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your eye doctor. Usually one drop into the affected eye once or twice a day, or as instructed (the effect on the pupil and vision can last several days). Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid and instil the drop without touching the dropper tip to the eye, then press the inner corner of the eye for a minute to limit absorption. Use exactly as prescribed.
Vision will be blurred and the eye more sensitive to light for some time. Wear sunglasses and do not drive until vision is clear. Press the inner corner of the eye after instilling to reduce body-wide absorption, and wipe away excess, especially in children, who are more sensitive (watch for flushing, fast heartbeat, dry mouth or unusual behaviour and seek advice). Not for use with narrow-angle glaucoma. Discard 28 days after opening. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice. This product information is for general guidance only and does not replace professional medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new medication or supplement. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
