Overview

Lactulac Suspension (lactulose) is a gentle osmotic laxative used to treat constipation by drawing water into the bowel to soften the stools and make them easier to pass. It is also used in liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy) to help clear ammonia from the body. As a mild, non-stimulant laxative suitable for many people including during pregnancy when advised, this 100ml suspension helps adults and children relieve constipation and restore comfortable, regular bowel movements.

Directions for Use

Take by mouth as directed on the packaging or by your doctor, measured with the cap or a spoon, usually once or twice daily, with plenty of water. It may take 1-2 days to work. The dose can be adjusted to produce soft, comfortable stools. It can be taken with water, juice or food to improve the taste. For constipation, drink plenty of fluids during the day.

Do not use if you have a bowel blockage (obstruction) or galactosaemia (a rare sugar disorder). Use with care if you are diabetic, as it contains sugars. May cause wind, bloating or cramping at first, which usually settles; reduce the dose if you get diarrhoea. Seek medical advice for severe abdominal pain, persistent constipation, or constipation with vomiting. Suitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed, but confirm with your doctor.
