Overview

Rectogesic 0.4% Ointment (30g) contains glyceryl trinitrate, a prescription treatment for the searing pain of chronic anal fissure. A small tear at the anal margin that refuses to heal because of muscle spasm. Applied locally, glyceryl trinitrate relaxes the internal anal sphincter and improves blood flow to the tear, easing pain within days and giving the fissure the conditions it needs to heal, often avoiding surgery. A discreet, clinically proven option for a condition many people suffer in silence.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor. Typically a small amount (about 2.5cm of ointment) applied to the anal margin every 12 hours for up to 8 weeks. Apply with a fingertip covered with cling film or a finger cot; wash hands before and after. Continue alongside fibre, fluids and stool softeners as advised to keep stools soft.

Headache is the most common side effect. It usually settles; a mild painkiller helps. Do not use with sildenafil, tadalafil or similar erectile dysfunction medicines. The combination causes dangerous blood pressure drops. Avoid with severe anaemia, raised intracranial pressure, or known nitrate allergy. May cause dizziness on standing. Rise slowly. Persistent bleeding or pain needs surgical review. Store below 25°C; discard 8 weeks after opening.
