Overview
Augmentin 228mg/5ml Suspension 70ml from GSK is a paediatric antibiotic combining amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (co-amoxiclav). The clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from bacterial enzymes that would otherwise destroy it, broadening its power against common childhood infections. Ear infections, sinusitis, throat infections, chest infections, urinary tract infections and some skin infections. This banana-flavoured suspension strength suits infants and younger children, dosed by weight. A doctor-prescribed first-line antibiotic trusted by paediatricians for decades.
Each 5ml (reconstituted): amoxicillin 200mg (as trihydrate) and clavulanic acid 28.5mg (as potassium clavulanate). Full excipient list available on product packaging.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. The pharmacist reconstitutes the powder with water before dispensing; shake the bottle well before every dose and measure with the dosing device provided. The dose is calculated from your child's weight and is usually given twice daily, at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. Space doses evenly (about 12 hours apart) and complete the full course even if your child seems better. Store the mixed suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7 days.
Do not use if your child is allergic to penicillins or has had liver problems with co-amoxiclav before. Stop and seek urgent care for any signs of allergic reaction. Rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing. Common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea and nappy-area thrush; give with food to reduce upset. Tell the doctor about any kidney problems or other medicines. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections only. They do not help colds or flu, and incomplete courses fuel antibiotic resistance. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new medication or supplement. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
