Overview

Augmentin 457mg/5ml Suspension 70ml from GSK is a higher-strength paediatric formulation of co-amoxiclav. Amoxicillin boosted with clavulanic acid to defeat bacteria that resist plain amoxicillin. It is prescribed for children with ear, nose and throat infections, chest infections, urinary tract infections and skin or soft-tissue infections. The 457mg/5ml 'Duo' strength allows convenient twice-daily dosing with smaller volumes for older or heavier children, dosed by weight. A cornerstone paediatric antibiotic in clinical practice, dispensed against prescription with clear weight-based instructions.

Each 5ml (reconstituted): amoxicillin 400mg (as trihydrate) and clavulanic acid 57mg (as potassium clavulanate). Full excipient list available on product packaging.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Shake the reconstituted bottle well before every dose and measure with the dosing device provided. The dose is calculated from your child's weight and is given twice daily, about 12 hours apart, at the start of meals to reduce stomach upset. Complete the entire prescribed course even if your child improves quickly. Store the mixed suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7 days.

Do not use if your child is allergic to penicillins or has had liver problems with co-amoxiclav before. Stop and seek urgent care for any allergic reaction. Rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing. Diarrhoea, nausea and oral or nappy thrush are the most common side effects. Inform the doctor of kidney disease or any other medicines the child takes. Use antibiotics only as prescribed. Misuse drives antibiotic resistance, a growing concern in Kenya.
