Overview

Daboral Syrup 125mg/5ml is a child-friendly liquid form of aminosidine sulphate (paromomycin), an aminoglycoside antibiotic for intestinal protozoal infections including amoebiasis, giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Frequent causes of persistent diarrhoea in children. The syrup acts directly in the intestines where the parasites live, with minimal absorption into the bloodstream. It is also used in suppressing gut flora before bowel surgery and in hepatic encephalopathy under specialist supervision. The 60ml bottle with measured dosing makes it easier for parents and caregivers to give an accurate dose to children who cannot swallow tablets.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medicine. Use only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Children's dosing is calculated by weight. Typically 30mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5-7 days for amoebiasis or giardiasis; your doctor will confirm the exact amount in ml. Shake the bottle well before each use and measure with the supplied cup or an accurate dosing syringe. Give with or after food, and complete the full course even if your child seems better.

Do not use if the child is allergic to paromomycin or other aminoglycosides, or has an intestinal obstruction. Use cautiously where there are ulcerative bowel lesions or kidney problems. Side effects can include nausea, tummy cramps, loss of appetite and diarrhoea. Ensure the child drinks plenty of fluids. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea worsens, blood appears in stool, or there are signs of dehydration. Tell the doctor about any other medicines the child is taking.
