Overview
Mirena from Bayer is a hormonal intrauterine system (IUS). A small, T-shaped device fitted inside the womb by a trained healthcare provider. That provides long-acting, reversible contraception for up to several years. It slowly releases the hormone levonorgestrel directly into the womb, thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining to prevent pregnancy very effectively. Mirena is also widely used to treat heavy menstrual periods, often making them much lighter. A trusted, convenient 'fit-and-forget' option for women wanting reliable long-term contraception or relief from heavy periods.
Active: Levonorgestrel 52mg intrauterine system, releasing levonorgestrel gradually over the licensed period.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription device that must be inserted and removed by a trained doctor or nurse, usually during or just after a period. Do not attempt to fit or remove it yourself. Once in place, it works continuously for the licensed number of years; your provider will tell you when it must be replaced. Learn to check the threads as advised, and attend a review after the first weeks and then as recommended. It can be removed at any time if you wish to stop or try to conceive.
Fitting is done by a trained professional after a suitability check. Irregular bleeding or spotting is common in the first months and usually settles, often to very light or no periods. Seek urgent care for severe lower-tummy pain, fever, unusual discharge, or pain during sex (possible infection or, rarely, the device moving or perforation), and if you miss a period and could be pregnant (rare ectopic pregnancy risk). It does not protect against STIs. Use condoms for that. Discuss your medical history before fitting.
