Overview
PrEP (TDF/FTC) is a once-daily tablet combining tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine, taken by HIV-negative adults and adolescents to greatly reduce the risk of getting HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis). When taken consistently every day, it is a highly effective part of a complete HIV-prevention approach that also includes condoms and regular testing. PrEP is for anyone who wants an extra, reliable layer of protection against HIV.
Directions for Use
This is a prescription medicine. Take only as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider. The usual approach is one tablet once daily, taken at about the same time each day with or without food, for as long as you need protection. You must have a confirmed HIV-negative test before starting and continue regular HIV testing while on PrEP. Taking it every day gives the best protection.
PrEP is only for people who are HIV-negative. Confirm your status with a test before starting and re-test regularly as advised. It does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy. Tell your doctor about any kidney problems, as your kidney function should be monitored. Possible early side effects include nausea or headache, which usually settle.
